DEALEY PLAZA - DALLAS, TEXAS

John Neely Bryan came to Texas from Van Buren, Arkansas, in 1840, intending to establish a trading post on the upper Trinity. Finding the Indians friendly, he built a hut on the river’s east bank in 1841, becoming the first white settler of present-day Dallas.
—Texas, A Guide To the Lone Star State (WPA, 1940)

Editor’s note: Dealey Plaza encompasses the site of Bryan’s encampment and thus might well be considered the city’s birthplace.
